As the Financial Times puts in today’s paper, the efforts to enforce the law couldn’t be larger.
Mr Obama has deported 2m illegal immigrants since taking office – a multiple of all his predecessors combined. Most were guilty of only minor infractions of the law, such as traffic offences, or other civil misdemeanours. It is hard to imagine tougher enforcement than this. It is also hard to imagine more extensive fencing – and drone patrols – along the US-Mexico border…
However, the fact that the Tea Party doesn’t want to give President Obama the satisfaction of a resolution and the insistence of Obama on the issue of naturalization will probably stop any step forward.
